Nationwide, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities use the creative arts as one form of rehabilitative treatment to help Veterans recover from and cope with physical and emotional disabilities.
VA Spinal Cord Injury Long-Term Care
Facilities provide long-term inpatient care and outpatient
clinical services for veterans with traumatic spinal cord injuries. For
most of the residents, the average length of stay is 285 days, the
SCI is their home and their window to the world. Volunteers such as V.E.T. provide a very necessary therapy or "distraction" from the regiment of long-term hospital stays.
Music therapy uses music to help people meet a variety of goals, from making friends to relieving stress to dealing with physical pain. Music therapists often use music to help people with mental illnesses such as major depression or eating disorders.
